New research claims olive oil drives obesity to greater extent than other fats

Had trouble deciding whether to post this here in Gaining, or over in Food and recipes, Lifestyle, or General.

New Research Claims Olive Oil Drives Obesity to Greater Extent Than Other Fats

Warning: source of this article is fat-negative, so expect the usual focus on fat being a Horrible Thing to Avoid in the tone and word choice. Adjust mental filters accordingly.

Haven’t made the time to read the original study nor check any of the other references, and prolly won’t. I’ve not personally experienced noticeable fattening effects from generous consumption of olive oil, but then my body is stacked against fattening in many ways on many levels.

Anyone here ever noticed a fattening effect attributable to olive oil? Hope there’s something to it… really like the idea of something else relatively healthy really cranking up generation of new fat cells.

Rather interesting, given that olive oil is considered a much healthier option for cooking with, versus other high smoke-point oils. We use it extensively at the house.

Researchers also said trans fat were good and saturated fats are bad. They said eggs were also bad. And cheese. And using fructose instead of sugar is much better! Guess what, we now know (but a lot of people doesn't yet), many years later, they are a lot of BS. But in the meantime, these fake info ruined the health of millions of people.

Down in the toilet this study can go. I won't even bother reading it. It's a study probably paid by another lobby, corn oil lobby probably, which is indeed crap. Follow the money.

Ps: here in Italy we indeed use a lot of olive oil and we are still one of the country with fewer obese in Europe. And I won't believe in any "this completely natural food is bad" nor "this artificial food made with extremely complex chemical reactions using solvents with unreadable names is good" study ever.

Totally agreed on following the money 👍 In general, the Mediterranean diet is still the best and I relish the moments when I can get to a restaurant here in the wondrous States that serves it up right!

I'm unable to read it because it's stuck behind a paywall. I'm also skeptical because I can't seem to find the study. A quick Google pulls up numerous studies talking about the positive impact olive oil has on weight management as recently as this year.

Totally agree. In fact the writers at the site from which i got the above article link agree with everything you wrote above, which made it all the more interesting to me that they were presenting this olive oil study.

Yep yep. Wish i had the time to follow the money in all the cases it’s needed.

Didn’t read the study but i don’t think that’s what it was saying, based on the synopsis. Also here in the U.S. i’m told what is sold as olive oil is most often “cut” (adulterated) by the common vegetable oils (corn, soy, canola/rapeseed) promoted by one or more of the lobbies you mention. So it could be the study used things labeled “olive oil” which actually were not.

OK, many flags raised. Site i pulled this from has a very spotty track record. I’ve personally found useful information there over the years, but there’s an awful lot of noise.

Apologies if anyone’s time feels wasted with this… just thought it was interesting if there was anything to it. Thanks for the replies!
